Dismal...

I just happened to be looking in my 1943 Webster dictionary because i wanted to look up the correct way to spell the word grey.

Is it grey....

or is it gray.

Well....apparently both words can be used...

and the definition pretty much states that...

well...

it's a dismal color...

dull...

cheerless...

not bright.

Oh...i totally agree...because i live here...right outside of chicago...

and the entire winter is bleek and dull...

very dismal.

But you know what...

i said heck {not the word i really said...but just go with it}....

i'm going to paint my bathroom...

i mean re-paint my bathroom ....

to my favorite pale grey....

the same color as my kitchen.

I guess to me....

grey in the bathroom is not at all

dismal and bleek...

but more like

soothing...

and calm

My mother .in. law give me this vintage silver brush....

i think it belonged to her great granny....

but don't totally hold me on my word here..

i'm just saying....

it might have...

at least that's what i tell people that ask

about it....

and even if it didn't come from her great granny...

it came from someone's granny.

And yes...

i am a lover of mirrors....

but don't get me wrong...

i don't stand in front of them for hours..

i promise....

alright....

i did once...

just once...

and it was a few months ago....

when i noticed something...

something evil was lurking on my scalp..

i hate to even say the word...

because you might not think i'm the real deal

anymore if i tell you.

You must pinky promise that if you should ever

run into me...

that you not ask me about it.

ok.

did i hear you promise....

alright....

i have started getting grey hairs...

{is it so random that here we are chatting about grey bathrooms and voila...hello grey hair...and if you scroll back up and look at the dictionary description..it says something about grey hair=elderly}

and i now color my hair on a regular basis.

screech...

scream....

and i just had a revelation...

that i am in fact getting old.

i hate that word.

and i even wore spanx under my

dress at my party...

uggggh.

what is happening to me?

hold on...let me step away for a moment.

I'm back!

whew.

just had to grab a quick bite of some

peppermint bark....

yup....

that is the reason i had to wear some spanx

under the dress.

don't worry though...i feel better now that i opened up

and told you a secret.

where was i....

oh...

the mirrors.....

i love the look of mismatched mirrors all

over a wall....and so i have been slowly

adding them to the bathroom.

Did i mention that this is the master bathroom...

yes....

my man uses this bathroom...

and so does lola....

this is the only bathroom that resides upstairs...

and this is one thing that my family knows..

and know my guests who stayed the night

on saturday...know now...

but one must not flush a la toilette while

one is in the shower...

it's not a pretty site to hear one

scream...

because they are in fact...

now getting a cold shower .

Funny how a color can be so amazing in some places and truly...well...dismal in others?

I love the grey walls. And the marshmallows. Have I told you my love for your use of marshmallows? I love it. Ingenious.

WE HAVE THE SAME SHOWER CURTAIN!
And I wanted to tell you I loved your dress at the party. I'm going to a party today so I went to Anthro and bought a beautiful gray/grey wool dress. I'm not comfortable taking pictures of myself. But trust me it's from Anthro so you know it's great!
Happy weekend to ya.
ps you can see my curtain somewhere in my blog. And I like the marshmellows.

You are hilarious! I enjoyed reading your blog sooo much - your decor is stunning. I love the gray backdrop for the whites. My hubby lived in Chicago once and he said it was gray and dirty. But a perfect wall color! I too have a collection of mismatched mirrors on my wall. They are all hand mirrors or old shaving mirrors in dark colors. If you haven't seen her decor already, check out Alice's at Painted White. You would love it!

I have a friend, my hair dresser, that says she pulls the grey's out as she sees them! She's like in her late 20's...Me, I color..got to keep the blond in there! Your bath is cute too! Come say hi :D

Grey hair, ugh, tell me about it! When I was at the hairdressers recently, the stylist actually told me actually they weren't all grey, they were in fact WHITE....I couldn't even laugh about that! :(

I loved reading about your Inspiring Evening, absolutely gorgeous....I love all your mirrors and your staircase looks so pretty :)

Happy Friday! xo

I love gray as well - it's dismal in the sky, but great in a home! And don't worry - I'm only 27 and I've been known to rock the spanx - unfortunately!

I find the separation of the two spellings quite easy. GrAy is dismal, boring, while grEy is french and chic. I'm sure grEy is what you were seeing in the mirror.

Kristin said...

oh tell me about the grey hair...sigh...not suppose to find one of those on a girls 30th birthday, how dismal is that!?!?
love the bathroom! i can tell you that my hundred year old farmhouse looks nothing like yours...want to trade?? mine comes with chickens and cows?!? ;0)

Martha said...

Okay...so just clicked off my comment and have to start over so hmmm...

I've always wondered about the spelling of grey myself...I actually {since I've never known} done what I feel like...to be honest I've been finding some {few but still enough to sigh about} grey too...right at the part of my hair...although it really honestly could have been white...I pulled those suckers out faster than you could say "grey"
Bathroom is gorgeous!!! LOVE the grey...and that shower curtain...really makes those floors stand out...just fabulous!

as a side note...I'm sure you noticed it also said "mature" next to elderly...I'm using it:)

Have a great weekend!

Wendy said...

Oh I love the bathroom! When I was there this summer it was still in its brighter phase (which I liked as well) But the gray/grey is amazing!!

Oh, and by the way, just because you have a gray/grey hair or two, it doesn't make you old. And you are still younger than me by a couple of years, so you are not ALLOWED to call yourself old. Because I am NOT old. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!!

Faded Plains said...

That's funny...I just posted about my bathroom makeover this morning...and I used my favorite shade of gray too. Your bathroom wears gray well.

Lemonade Makin' Mama said...

Girl, I have so much gray/grey in my hair it's not even funny. Not that grey/gray is ever funny... I can't exactly think of a time when it would be something you'd just laugh and ha, ha over drinks about.

I pull my hair really taught over my head and stare at my scalp for long stretches of time and then complain for days.

In fact, since we're on the subject, I am dying my hair (myself) this very morning to uh.. touch up my roots.

And I won??? Yippee!!

I'll have my people call your people. :)

Kacey said...

Kasey, it looks gorgeous! Serene and elegant. I love the mirrors. I've had a plan to do a collection of mirrors somewhere in my house, but I keep changing my mind on the placement. (Last night it was above our headboard.)

p.s. grey hair is evil. I found one a few months ago. Was not happy.

Suzann said...

Gray (grey) hair? Let's not talk about it.

Gray (grey) paint? I'm loving it. I'm currently on the hunt for the perfect gray paint myself. I haven't looked at Ralph Lauren though.

Your bathroom? Looks lovely.

Spanx - don't talk to me about me about body issues sweetie. LOL. You're adorable.

Tracy ~Seeking Refinement~ said...

So true - Gray/Grey is all relative. {from here on out, I will be interchanging the spelling....}

Grey days outside = ok in small doses.

Gray painted items in the home = FABULOUS

GREY HAIRS = UNACCEPTABLE. (i discovered many a gray hair just before my 31st birthday. THIRTY-ONE. I'm getting older, but c'mon....)

GRAY Wall-interiors = perfection.

xoxoxo

I am a lover of gray - in nature and in homes. I think it is beautiful.

Leah C said...

Oh don't be surprised if Ralph Lauren grey goes out of stock and a lot of bathrooms turn gray all over! I don't like grey skies, but I do love your bathroom! The color, the mirrors, the floor {sigh}; it's all so beautiful:)
As far as grey hairs go, I've got plenty of those. I prefer to call them silver, though...silver hair sounds sophisticated, not old;) Don't ya think?

Preppy Mama said...

seriously, there is nothing dismal about the color grey. I LOVE it! It is my new "black" and I love it on your walls!!

bethchien said...

I am sure the grey in your hair is just as gorgeous as the grey on your bathroom wall! even more gorgeous dyed a dark brown! lol
Hope you are havin a fab Friday!

Grey/Gray hairs don't always mean you are getting old. Heck look at Steve Martin. Or look at me - not that you ever will as I am too shy to post pics of myself on the net. But I got my first gray hair at 12. I had scoliosis and had to wear a brace and had major traumatizing back surgery and since then there were a series of family emergencies in hospitals and I kid you not every time I went into the bathroom of the hospital I found more gray hairs. So I blame that. I'm 30 and I just dye my hair. I look much younger, I still get carded on the RARE occassion I get a drink out.

Don't fret the gray hairs. And don't let your old grandma from the old country to pluck it out on sight. Ouch!! You aren't going to make it go away!! It'll come back. Hopefully.

I like pale pale blue...soothing. And white furniture in varying shades. But somehow you make the gray work.

Simply Me Art said...

Grey/Gray= Good only in clothes, on walls, cars even furniture!
Grey/Gray in Hair really, really BAD! Love the bathroom, xo

Shannan Martin said...

Always, always grey. That one little vowel gives it a touch of class, I think. I mean, not that grey was ever lacking in class. I would love to wear grey every day. Grey is the new black, and all. And as for getting older, I consulted Calvin's doctor about my feet swelling issue when I fly and how i was concerned about our impending 18 hours flight. He informed me that I should be investing in a pair of "compression stockings". That's right.

The bathroom looks great! I think it feels more like you, meshes perfectly with the rest of your house. You are such the storyteller. I love it!!!

Anita said...

I just had this discussion on grey paint with my daughter over her bathroom- but in the end, she decided she wants blush pink to go wigth her blue ad white damask shower curtain....

Laurel said...

Yes, grey is the new black and always spelled with an e. I have cousins that have the last name Gray so that decided it for me.

Funny I was just talking about this with my friend because she is teaching her daughters how to spell GREY. Her hubs told her she spelled it wrong. I swifty (but sweetly) corrected him :)

By the way, I think I saw in that dictonary that it said grey=mature. Yep, that's what I chose to read....

Love the toned down bathroom and that shower curtain is to.die.for. Wasn't it red or something before? I just remember that beautiful chandy above the tub.

You can never have too much grey. Well, maybe in your hair but remember that = MATURE.

You have such fabulous decor vision! I love your bathroom! I am also a mirror lover, huge! My husband started to notice when I kept bringing home mirrors I found that I loved... ;)
I just like how they light up the space without electricity! Shimmer, glamour, pizzaz and more come alive with a few mirrors!
So my inside secret is that I am actually MOURNING the loss of a mirror I sold recently, growing impatient with it behind my door and the cold weather came and there was no place to paint it and revamp, so I sold it...the next day I missed it! Seriously! Next time I will rethink selling a mirror as they apparently are my prized possessions! ;)

Don't worry about grey hair. The more that you worry the more you will get !! I think it must be hereditary. I don't have any and I'm miles older than you !! Just the luck of the draw, I'm afraid, Kasey.
