I don't have that amount of time, even though i work from home now.
See the black appliances? The cherry cabinets? The black quartz counters? Well my friend Sherry just about screamed at me....."you can't touch the cabinets"! aaagghh. what's a cottage loving french girl to do?
Cute idea #1: I used an old locker basket, and it stores all of my dish soaps and sponges neatly inside, see it next to the sink? Oh , and like the chippy pot rack? I have one left in shop. here.
oh, and my beloved anthro cups. How i love the yellow tea cups. Do you know I have not been into Anthro in over one month! She beckons me, and I have an hour or two today that i just might pop over to say "hello" to the girls;)

Ok, I am not usually one to leave comments...but I have to this time. I have almost the exact same cabinets ~ and after months of agonizing about it ~ I painted them white...and I LOVE IT!! Everyone thought I was crazy, but once it was done, I was THRILLED! I do remember the stress of wondering if I was doing the right thing, but they will be fabulous. They will make more sense with the rest of your home. Keep those photos coming. They inspire me to get a few projects done around my house!
It's your kitchen so do what you need to do to make it feel special to you:) I love your decorating style. And I really love that shutter shelf!
I'm in the same boat! My kitchen cabinets are the same (cherry, dark...) and I've wanted to paint them (well, REALLY want to YANK them out!) but I have NO time or patience for either right now. Idea: what if you nailed in a section of old, chippy ivory pressed tin ceiling tiles to cover the entire wall area behind your oven? That would be quick, easy, inexpensive and further your "cottage-y" theme. You could even continue the use of the pressed tin where ever you could on the kitchen walls. I have the original formica counter tops (STILL!) from the previous owners and I plan to nail down some aged tin ceiling tiles right onto counters to "hold me over" until I can just gut the entire kitchen. I feel your pain, girl. While my kitchen isn't "modern" it definitely isn't even close to my "style" or my dream kitchen. But, it works and that's all I need, I guess... :)

Kasey -- forgot something (like it matters!)...
Could you nail up any tin tiles to the fronts of the cabinets anywhere? But then, I guess if you were going to nail into the fronts, you might as well just paint them...
Which brings me to the other thing I was going to say before -- if YOU want to paint your cabinets... PAINT THEM! They're cabinets, not a piece in the Louvre. Its just stuff at the end of the day and you paid good money for those cabinets when they came with your house - which in my book, entitles you to do whatever you please with them, girlie. :)
Here's my spin: you own the house, it doesn't own you.
XOXO

I've got to tell you...I love cherry cabinets BUT I love painted cabinetry more. When we bought our house the cabinets were builder's grade oak...yikes! People kept telling us to leave 'em. Couldn't do it. So we painted them a warm creamy white. I so LOVE it! We have black and stainless appliances...and still a white laminate counter...double yikes! But we plan on replacing the counter with something black.
I don't know if white is the color you're thinking for the cabinets, but I think it would be stunning with your black countertops and appliances. (And I LOVE the pot rack!)
My husband always has a small heartattack when I talk about painting cabinets but if our next house does not already have white cabinets he will need to close his eyes and think happy thoughts cause they WILL be painted. I think that your's would look lovely painted and definitely flow better with the rest of your house. Go for it! Just make sure to show us plenty of pics afterwards;)
I am gearing up for a trip to Anthro too. It's just to hard to stay away!
paint 'em kasey paint 'em!!!
do you hear the chant echoing from a distance ?

I have to agree that white cabinets would look great! It's fun to finally see the kitchen. Now I can see why you first noticed that my counters were bare. You have so much to look at in your kitchen. Very nice!
I think you've done a great job accessorizing your kitchen and making it as cottage-y as possible. The cabinets are a departure from your style. I think you should paint them. I have cream cabinets with soapstone counters (dark) and it looks really nice ~ and I have a similar green paint color. You just have to do what makes you happy!!
Thanks for taking us inside your kitchen - love it! The cake stands are my fav!
Thanks for indulging us Kasey! My first house had cherry cabinets and grey/black counters and I loved them. But when I moved to San Clemente, the first thing I loved, besdies the stairs being in the back of the house, were the white kitchen cabinets and the yellow paint. I loved it, it felt right,it felt like home... so I say paint them...just do it!
I love the pot rack, and the anthro cups and the wire basket and i think I already said this: but the cupcake sign and the cake stands...sigh! It is all great!
Hugs!
I love, love your hutch. And about your cabinets, I say paint them! They cherry is beautiful but, it's not you. Go for it!
i would kill for those cabinets. i have old icky farmhouse cabinets that i did paint about 10 years ago. it is a long process but well worth it when you're done. go ahead - paint away. you have such a beautiful style, they will look gorgeous when done.
Oh my gosh your kitchen is adorable. Cherry cabs and all. I would love to come have tea in your kitchen - it is charming, cozy, whimsical and darling all at once. It is so inspiring to see someone embrace their style and make their house truly their own. I love it!
well, thanks a bunch for sharing. i do think your kitchen is nice (mine is pretty similar) but i live in a craftsman house and don't really get to go cottagey (except in the girls bedrooms...which is a must). will your husband cringe to paint them? mine would for sure. but it would look nice with your home. it is a ton of work, i've done it twice myself at other houses. good luck. be sure to share again if you take the plunge.

those yellow coffee cups are to die for. You always find the cuties things ever.
ya know, those anthro teacups would look darn cute filled with a candle!
Hi Kasey!
Your Kitchen looks gorgeous and so quaint!! I love the cream colored hutch and all those pretty details that grace it too!
Lots of people are afraid to paint such pretty wood, but I say, here's what a french girl would do : GO FOR IT! It will be gorgeous!!
Hi, first time I have stumbled upon your blog and I just have to comment to say how much I love your kitchen! I, too, am a cottage gal that loves to paint things and make them fit in better with the style. As for your cabinets, well - if they don't make you happy as they are now, by all means - paint them! And antique them a little bit by adding vintagey anthro style hardware.
(Though if you plan to sell the house in the future - real estate agents would likely advise you not to paint them - the modern new look is a real plus for most buyers. Sorry, I watch too many house flipping shows not to add that in. lol)
Your kitchen is lovely! I adore the cake stands and tea cups, exactly my style. Unfortunately my husband hates my 'granny stuff' so I have to limit myself! Oh and I would definitely paint the cabinets, I love painted wood.
I LOVE your teacups too!!!
