a name is a name is a name

I get asked all the time how i { or "we" if you think my hubs had anything to do with the process} came up with the names of our children.

When we found out we were having our first, a boy......I immediately fell in love with the name Levi. I don't know why or how, but it was what it was and I begged the hubs to consider it.

And then one day we were watching a show on TLC called "Baby Story". Do you remember that show? I think every pregnant woman watches it without admitting it. It's our best way of really seeing what the heck is going to happen when we go into labor.

Anyways......one of the women they were featuring had a little boy and named him Mason.

*oh boy*

Yup, we got our first kids name from a t.v show. I'd like to say we got if from some long lost relative that had died some heroic death, but alas..... Mason Levi was born and that was 8 years ago.

So, then we got preggo 6 mo later.

yup, you heard that right.

6 mo.

We were surprised this time around, and only because this little girl had to have her legs crossed during the ultrasound. I knew right then she was a she, otherwise my boy was going to be a leg crosser.

I knew I wanted a Lola. I like names that are unique but not crazy. Bryan liked the name Piper. So, when little baby girl made her appearance, she came out screaming with a pout on her face.

Lola Grace.

I bet you didn't know that my parents and Bryan's parents had a "meeting", and at this "meeting", they veto'd the name Lola.

Who has a "meeting" and decides that?

No one had a Lola 6 years ago.

And yes, I love how you girls email me and let me know about your little doggies named "Lola", that's a real treat....thank you:-)

Now I hear the name on the celebrity circuit, but I had it first. Lola is almost 7.

Then another 6 mo. later.....

Ha. Had you there for a minute huh?!

This time we waited.....

The day Lola turned 2, we found out another bun was in the oven.

How the heck did that happen i ask you?

I plead the fifth.

So this time around I was set on the name Atticus. I loved..love the book "to kill a mockingbird" and have always loved that name, but once again the hubs was so dang stubborn. No. No he said. Who names their kid "Atticus"!?

Well, we would i begged him.

The hubs grew up in South Florida and really wanted a beachy, fish, shark, whale of a name.

Little Fin was born.

and since i lost my battle with the first name, i got to choose the middle name.

Hudson.

Fin Hudson.

He's going to be a rockstar one day.

Have you read the book "To Kill a Mockingbird"??? Do you remember Atticus' last name?

It was Finch. Atticus Finch.

Take the "ch" off of Finch.

I got my way in the end.

I LOVE knowing how people choose their names! It is so special and so fun. Your childrens names are perfection!
And TLC...oh my TLC...it was birth control for a long time and then it became the train wreck I couldn't turn away from once I got pregnant!

I TOTALLY feel you on the whole name game...I chose Harper years before my son was even born. It would have been Harper if I had a girl too. Anyhoo, when I chose it, it wasn't even in the top 1000 for names, I had never ever met a single one or had heard of it other than Harpers Bazaar and Harper Lee TKAMB, but then after I had him, Pottery Barn Kids decide they want to name a crib Harper, and now I see the name everywhere. I was kinda pissed hahahah! He is still always the oldest Harper whenever I hear the name go around, so I like to think he's the first in my little bubble. Our next name will for sure be a 1st, but that is TOP SECRET!!!! and won't be for another few years too:)

TLC? Of course I watched it. It is what made me FREAK OUT about giving birth....and I was already pregnant. too late. no turning back now. it took me until month 8 to finally say "its going to happen...and I am NOT going to be a screamer like those women"

turns out......

NO - i wasn't a screamer!

I had a c-section because my daughter was SUPREMELY overdue. (i blame my doc) I didn't scream, I didn't even have to push. So, I guess God knew what I could handle...

And God willing, I will have another c-section someday!

xo

PS - LOVE your originality. You ooze "Kasey" - and it is so fun to be friends with you. You are an original, and you inspire me to really nail down who I am, and start to ooze "Tracy". I mean, we had to invent a name for your sense of style! love all things about you!

How fun to hear how people picked their names. My whole family (in-laws too) didn't like my kids' names either, but that just made me pick them. LOL! Love how they tried to veto Lola! I love the name Lola. Oh, and one of my good friends here has a 3 sons. One named Schueler (sp?), one named Spencer and one named Atticus! I hadn't ever heard of anyone except for the one from To Kill a Mockingbird.

...your children have the sweetest expressions! Beautiful little faces.

I work with a Lola, her real name is Leanna. For some reason we call her Lola. I had a neighbor name there boy Atticus, but I think it was from a band? Early 90's or so? Fin is really cool, they are all great names. Good choices ;)

I always thought the name Lola was precious. But if we named our daughter that it wouldn't work too well...our last name is Poppy, so she would've been "Lola Poppy." It's too close to lollipop, I'm pretty sure.

Michelle said...

Your children's names are just precious! Thanks for sharing the story how their names came to be, too!

Leanne said...

I LOVE the book "To Kill A Mockingbird." I worked with a fellow that had three children- all with unique names. His youngest boy was named Atticus. And I remember several people going... "what???" Oh, and Gregory Peck was amazing in the 1960s film version of the book.

I think your kiddos have sweet names.

I never went to school with ANYONE with my name. And then I found myself at a small college... in a small architecture program. There were TWO girls named Leanne- in the class below mine. Apparently, I was named after some cousin in Kansas. Hmmm. I think your name stories are much more entertaining! :)

Very nice names. I definitely like uncommon names. I'm sure the grandparents love the name Lola now. : )

I used to watch Baby Story when I was pregnant and cry. It always looked so painful. And it was!

SO cute. BTW my cat is Lola (going on 11 years). I have one a little better, my in laws begged my parents to convince me to change my son's name because there were too many Sam's in the family ( niece and daughter in law both named Samantha AND it was their son who picked his name, along with my dr). Oh well, it's your right to name your baby. To this day they call him Samuel (and I have had a few tantrums) but now he is old enough to say for himself, "MY NAME IS SAM!" Good boy.

The boys...CJ, Owen, Zachary, Jeremy, Noah & future baby Grayson.

Kasey I just love reading your posts everyday! They make me smile!! Since I was only fortunate enough to have 2 babies -the last one leaves the nest this year..:( I don't have any "cool" name stories, well maybe a little. My oldest Ashley was in born in 1987 and the most popular name in 1987 was ??? ASHLEY!! Oh well love her to death! My baby "18" yr old boy is Nathan. His dad wanted to name him Justin Other as in Just Another Smith or Jones or whatever the last name...that's why we pick their names not their daddies!!

Love it! However, I think I heard this some where...maybe People Magazine~ huh...can't remember :)

Oh, yeah! Loved your post yesterday. It made me laugh. :)

I remember with my daughter I wanted to name her Audrey (as in Hepburn). Several people voiced how much they HATED the name. So I ended up with Alyssabeth. With the knowledge that baby pregnancy #2 was a boy the hubster could not be awayed from Ian. WE told no one until after the ink was dry on the birth certificate and no one said a peep. :)

Now I know why you're my new bestie! Because we have a Mockingbirdie connection. Sweet.

And, don't worry about the whole "named my kid after someone on a TV show", because Boo Rad and I plan to name our first (no, not on the way yet, in case you were curious) after a character in a Quentin Tarantino film.

I love all of their names! I had my kid's names picked out since middle school....so Poor Chad didn't have a chance. :) (kacey because my initials were k.a.c and Collin is because my mom's middle name was Collins)
Also....SOOOO EXCITED! we are going to make the drive to anthrology KID FREE on saturday morning. I feel like it's christmas!!!!!!

I love your kids' names! To Kill A Mockingbird is my favorite book(read it 11 times...so far) and if I'd had a boy, the name Atticus would have been considered:) As it turns out, I was blessed with 2 girls. When I was a teenager, I watched the soap One Life to Live and the actress who played Jenny was named Brynn Thayer; I decided then & there, if & when I had a baby girl, I was naming her Brynn. When I was 29, my 1st daughter was born. Her name is Brynn Hayley:)

Kari said...

Oh. My. Gosh. Our top 3 names for Ava were Ava, Lola, and Piper. Not even kidding. Not one little bit. And our boy name? Hudson. Not kidding. Again. Twilight music sounding. I'm still sick that I didn't get to use Hudson. I had a friend recently have a boy named Hudson and I wanted to scream I had it first! But of course, I don't. But then I started thinking I like it so much I would almost name a girl that. You know, Hudson Rose or something with a feminine middle name.

You're a crack up. Funny thing is, I call my youngest Fin as a nickname. Always loved that name. (nothing like his given name, however.) We went with Family names for all our kiddos (You'd be surprised at the names though. Not your typical family names.) Anyhoo. Love the names...and such cute kiddos!!

Great names for your kids! Your Fin definitely looks like a Fin. My #2 is a Finn. Finnley Reid. Born last year white hair and all. I love this post. All your posts brighten the day!

Kasey,
Once again, thank you for the great pleasure of being able to peak into your life. You have a gift for expressing what so many of us experience. I mean it when I say I so enjoy my quick quiet get-away to your blog on an almost daily basis. You always make me smile in the least and even occasionally cough up my coffee through my nose. I love the music and keep it playing while I sew or as background music while I read to my kiddos. I love your childrens' names, and I love to hear how people choose. What I don't understand is why, after 30 plus years of naming dolls and dreaming of my kids' names, does my husband even have an opinion when all he did was play in the dirt. I'm not dishing on him, really, 'cause I think he rocks, but the naming game always gets interesting. He does allow me to give two middle names to my girls ...it is the only way I'll get to use most of my favorites. So, while some of my kiddos have obnoxiously long names, they have good shortened/nicknames. I already have my next three daughters named...and they'll probably never exist, so they might be cow or goat names in the future. We are adopting two boys in the next several months, but I'm not so picky about my boy names. Here are my current kiddos:
*Jacob Gregory (J.)
*Clare Bernadette Marie (Clare)
*Maximilian Thomas (Max)
*Jude Dominic (Jude/Judo) (His birth mom chose his middle name)
*Magdalene Louise Miriam (Maggie Lou)
***And my girls that don't exist are:
*Jane Meredith Goretti (Janey)
*Mary Katherine Elizabeth (Kate or Mary Kate)
*Genevieve ? Mae (Eve, Evie)
Now how is that for a mom who spends entirely too much time thinking about and loving names! Pretty Pathetic!

What a lovely, and funny, story. I think it's wonderful you've given your beautiful children unique, not-so-common names. When our family was blessed to adopt my baby brother last year (yep...i have a baby brother at the age of 37), I was given the honor of naming him: Langston, after my favorite poet...and Jeremiah, a prophet; Langston Jeremiah. He is bound to do great things.:)

Good morning Kasey (or should I call you cousin?)

I love all their names and they are perfect for each one. People tell you their dog's name is Lola?? LOL niiiice....

Boy or girl, Alex was going to be Alex and his middle name Martin comes from my grandfather. Annie came from my great grandmother Annie Belle (which I wanted to name her, but was vetoed by her dad on the Belle part) and her middle name Leigh came from Vivien Leigh (Scarlett~ Gone with the wind). I should do a post on that... just kidding ;)
